달의 2배 크기나 되는 여름철 밤하늘의 대표적인 성운 입니다.
밝은 성단 속에 빛나는 성운과 그 사이를 가로지르는 암흑대, 그리고 중간중간의 암흑성운 얼룩이 인상적입니다.

    연분홍 진주를 품고 있는 모습과 흡사하군요.

    M8에 경포같은 석호(Lagoon)라는 이름을 지어준 것은 가운데를 지나는 암흑대때문이겠죠? 기원은 잘 알지 못하지만 그 모습이 바다와의 관계가 많이 연상이 됩니다. 석호보다는 산호/진주 등의 이름이 어울리는 것 같습니다.
